What is a normal shipping rate per kg from China?

Shipping guide · rates · updated 2026

The question people actually ask is never "how does freight pricing work". It is "my agent does 8–9€/kg with 8 days shipping, rate that 1–10", or "someone showed 20 kg for $120 and I'm paying $130 for 5 kg". Those are the same question: am I being had?

The honest answer has two parts. First, there is no published fair rate to check yourself against, because the agent is not the one setting the price — the freight line is. Second, and more usefully, the thing that makes two quotes differ by a factor of four is almost never the agent's margin. It is weight, volume and line class. This page shows you how to read your own quote well enough to know whether the number is reasonable.

1. Why "per kg" is a misleading way to compare

A shipping bill is not proportional. A large part of it is fixed — the line minimum, the handling component, the clearance step — and those costs do not shrink when the parcel does.

ParcelFixed costsEffect on the per-kg number
3 kgSame as any parcelDominate the bill — worst value per kg you will ever see
10 kgSameDiluted; this is where most people sit
20 kg+SameTrivial — the per-kg number drops sharply

Which resolves the comparison that started this page. Someone paying a similar total for twenty kilograms as you are for five is not using a secret cheaper agent. They are amortising the same fixed costs over four times the weight. Comparing per-kg numbers across different parcel weights is not a comparison at all.

As for the rates buyers report: figures in the high single digits to low teens per kilogram in euros come up repeatedly for mid-weight parcels on standard air lines, with heavy consolidations landing lower. Treat that as what people say they pay, not as a tariff — it is community reporting, and it varies by destination, season and line.

2. The four things that actually set your number

  1. Destination countryThe single biggest factor and the one no comparison ignores at its peril. A rate quoted to one country tells you nothing about another.
  2. Class of lineExpress is fastest and dearest per kg, general air sits in the middle, economy and sea-based lines are cheapest and much slower. Comparing an express quote to an economy quote is comparing two products.
  3. Total weightSee above. Heavier parcels get better per-kg rates, always.
  4. Volumetric weightThe one people miss entirely. Explained next, and it is where the money is.

3. Volumetric weight: why your box weighs more than your scales say

Air freight is priced on chargeable weight — whichever is greater, the actual weight or the volumetric weight calculated from the box dimensions (length × width × height in centimetres, divided by a divisor the line publishes; 5000 and 6000 are the usual ones).

This hits agent buyers harder than almost anyone else, because what people order is bulky and light:

What you orderedWhat you get charged on
Two pairs of trainers in their boxesVolume — you are paying air freight for cardboard
A puffer jacketVolume — loft, unless compressed
Hoodies and tracksuitsVolume, until vacuum-packed
Jeans, belts, accessoriesActual weight — these travel efficiently

Three fixes, in order of how much they save: have the shoe boxes removed, ask for compression on soft goods, and read the dimensions on the quote, not just the weight. If chargeable weight is well above actual weight, the box is the problem and repacking is worth asking for before you pay.

4. So is your agent overcharging you?

Probably not much, and not in the way people suspect — because agents are not carriers. They consolidate your items and hand the box to a freight line, and the major agents buy from broadly the same market. Where they genuinely differ is narrower than the marketing suggests:

  • The margin added on top of the line rate.
  • How many lines they offer to your specific country — often the real difference.
  • How close the checkout estimate lands to the final bill.
  • Whether packing services (shoe-box removal, compression) cost extra.
  • How tightly they pack the box — which loops straight back to volumetric weight and can outweigh every other difference.

So the only comparison worth running is the same basket, quoted at two or three agents, to your actual address. Headline rates compared in the abstract tell you nothing.

5. "Tracking says not found" — three causes, one is bad

This is the second most common message we see, and it usually arrives with a lot more panic than the situation deserves.

  1. No first scan yet. The number was issued before the parcel physically entered the carrier's network. Economy and consolidated lines can take a week or more to produce that first event. Nothing is wrong.
  2. It changed hands. The parcel has been passed to a domestic carrier in your country and the original number stopped updating. You need the new number, not more patience — ask the agent for it.
  3. It is stalled at customs. Least common, and almost always because a charge is waiting to be paid. Check your email and your texts before assuming it is lost — an unpaid charge notice is far more likely than a missing box, and parcels are held for a limited period before being returned.

6. If you need it by a date

The part people underestimate is not the flight. A parcel spends time in three places nobody quotes for: waiting in the warehouse while you consolidate and approve QC, customs clearance at the far end, and the final domestic leg.

So if there is a fixed date — a season starting, a trip, the start of a school year — three rules: order weeks rather than days ahead; pick a faster line than you think you need, because the cheap line's saving is not worth the deadline; and do not add one more item late, because every addition restarts the consolidation wait. That last one is the single most common way a parcel misses a date.

The short version

  1. Per-kg numbers are only comparable at the same weightFixed costs dominate small parcels. A 20 kg parcel will always beat a 5 kg one per kilogram.
  2. The line sets the price, not the agentCompare the same basket at two or three agents to your own address. Nothing else is a comparison.
  3. Kill the volume before you compare quotesShoe boxes out, soft goods compressed. This changes chargeable weight, which changes every number you are about to look at.
  4. "Not found" usually means no first scanOr a handover to a domestic carrier. Check for an unpaid charge notice before assuming the worst.
  5. Deadlines need weeks, not daysAnd never add one more item late.

The two decisions that move this number most: which shipping line you pick, and whether you bundle a haul or ship single items. If the figure at checkout still looks wrong, the checkout total explained separates the goods from the freight. And if the worry is the border rather than the price: will a parcel get seized and what a customs hold actually means.

Why a shipping rate per kg is never a single number

Any published shipping rate per kg is a starting point, never a final price. Lines quote a shipping rate per kg that steps down as weight rises, so the shipping rate per kg you actually pay depends on how heavy the box is before anything else.

Minimums complicate the shipping rate per kg further. Almost every line sets a floor, so on a light parcel the effective shipping rate per kg is far above the published figure. That is why a shipping rate per kg quoted for a one-kilo box tells you almost nothing about a five-kilo one.

Chargeable weight decides the shipping rate per kg

The shipping rate per kg applies to chargeable weight, never to actual weight. For bulky goods the box dimensions produce a volumetric figure that exceeds the scale reading, and the shipping rate per kg is applied to whichever is greater.

This is where most shipping rate per kg estimates go wrong. A realistic shipping rate per kg calculation for hoodies or shoes has to start from volume, because the shipping rate per kg is being multiplied by a number the scales never showed you.

What a normal shipping rate per kg actually looks like

Ranges rather than one figure are the honest answer on any shipping rate per kg. Economy lines quote the lowest shipping rate per kg and take longest; express quotes the highest shipping rate per kg and arrives fastest; general air sits between. Any specific shipping rate per kg you read online is tied to a route and a date.

Compare the shipping rate per kg within your own quote instead. The spread between the cheapest and dearest shipping rate per kg on the same box is the only comparison that reflects your parcel, your destination and the current market — and it is the comparison the warehouse screen puts in front of you anyway.
